I grew up listening to Dr. Demento’s radio show and got to hear all kinds of wacky songs. We grew up listening to the Dr. Demento Presents: Greatest Christmas Novelty CD and thoroughly enjoyed having some alternative songs to sing. The following 5 are some of my favorite novelty holiday songs, complete with YouTube videos for you to check them out. Which one do you like the best?
1. 12 Days of Christmas (Strange Brew) – Bob & Doug McKenzie
I love Strange Brew. It’s hilarious that it’s basically a drunken Canadian version of Hamlet. Dave Thomas and Rick Moranis do so well at playing Bob & Doug McKenzie. I am a big fan of their version of the 12 Days of Christmas. I would definitely like to have 3 French toasts and 4 pounds of backbacon instead of the traditional French hens and calling birds!
2. Walkin’ Round in Women’s Underwear – The Fifth Inversion/Bob Rivers & Twisted Radio
Another favorite is this parody of “Walking ‘Round a Winter Wonderland”. Whenever THAT song comes on the radio, I have to sing the refrain about walkin’ round in women’s underwear over the real words 🙂
3. Christmas at Ground Zero – Weird Al Yankovic
I love this man and am thrilled at the due he’s finally receiving this year, since he had his first #1 album AND was named one of GQ’s Men of the Year (woot!). Find out what Christmas would be like during a nuclear holocaust.
4. I Saw Daddy Kissing Santa Claus – Kip Addotta
This is a racier version of “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus”. There is a twist ending 🙂
5. Nuttin’ For Christmas – Stan Freberg
This song is all about the naughty deeds of a little boy who is lamenting that Santa won’t bring him anything. This also has a twist ending 🙂
BONUS: The Night Santa Went Crazy by Weird Al Yankovic
Someone pointed out that The Night Santa Went Crazy was also excellent. I agree so I am adding it in here too.
I’m just going to leave this one here for you. I think you might like it.
